Panelists appreciate simple and personal videos, so skip involving your communication department. Just turn on your phone and record a video in portrait mode. Be personal and share a bit of yourself.
A trick is to imagine you have the panelist in front of you and that you're having a conversation with each other. This not only creates a more comfortable and relaxed feel in the video but also makes it easier for the panelist to relate to you as a person and share their ideas with you.
Three simple tips for recording a video question:
Ask an open question. Avoid writing a script with every word you want to say. Decide what you want to ask and why you're asking that question. This makes it easier to focus on the area and talk freely about it. For example: Why..., What works well with..., What do you miss..., Tell me aboutโฆ
Keep the video short. Somewhere between 30-60 seconds works well for most cases. In the video, you can describe a bit of background to the question before asking it, then formulate a more concise, core question in text.
Consider timing. Base it on yours and your colleagues' availability when scheduling the panel question. If you send it out in the morning, it's good to have allocated time in the morning to ask follow-up questions. It might be enough to spend 15 minutes in the morning and 15 in the afternoon. Ask follow-up questions and participate in the discussion while the question is open, catching panelists when the question is still top of mind.
The video question to the panel is time-limited, and you choose how many days it's out; we recommend that the question be open for at least 3 days. The frequency of asking questions to your panel vary, but about once every four weeks is a common rhythm.
๐ฅ Give the panelists an extra boost!
Always give thanks for the engagement in both the comments and in the video questions. Panelists want to feel that their effort is appreciated, so take the time to tell them what you learned from the previous video question when recording a new one. And when you've done something based on input from the panel, start the video question by telling them!
