Panels offer you the opportunity to gather qualitative feedback from many in just a few hours. You invite a selection of your customers to a panel, send out video questions, receive answers, and can ask follow-up questions whenever you want.
We guide you step by step to get started with your panel recruitment.
Identify the target audience
It's always good to start by pinpointing what you need to know and who can provide answers. Consider the following:
- What do you want to find out? Is there an ongoing project where you need an outside perspective? Do you want to explore an area or test ideas?
- Who do you want to talk to? Do you have a specific target audience in mind? Such as a particular customer segment, age group, users, etc.
- How do you reach your target audience? Do you have contact information, or is your target audience, for example, on social media?
Invite to your panel
If you have access to email addresses, it's common to recruit by sending an email invitation to the panel. However, any channel where you can share the panel link (itβs a simple URL) with the people you want to invite works fine, such as posting on social media or a QR code on posters or stickers.
If you're creating your own QR code or links on social media to the panel page, make sure to design it so that it's clear who you're addressing who you want to invite to the panel. If you want young people, you can write "Are you between 18-25 years old and want to contribute your thoughts and ideas about Purple Bank? Join the Purple Bank Labs panel."
Ps. Your panel link is the link you received when you created your panel. You can find it in the settings for your panel, and it looks something like this: "panelista.com/purple-bank-labs".
Make your invitation personal
Write a short and personal message when inviting to your panel, something like the examples below. Remember to use a personal approach and not sound too corporate.
It may be a good idea to mention when you'll send out the first video question so that people join the panel immediately. You can also send a reminder that it's not too late to join the panel. Then wait a few days, so that people have the chance to join the panel before you send out the first question.
Note! Only approved panelists when the video question is sent out will be notified about the question and able to respond. If you're the panel owner, you'll receive a notification in your email when someone wants to join your panel, so you have a chance to approve individuals before sending out your next question.
Example of what an invitation to a panel could look like, feel free to use your own graphic manner and make it personal and inviting!
FAQ about panels
How many panel participants do we need to recruit?
A panel can consist of anywhere from 30 to 200 people depending on the target audience and what you want to discuss. You can invite more and add to the panel over time. Remember, we're looking for a smaller group of engaged individuals rather than as many as possible.
Wide or niche panel?
Both work! Some start with a broad panel to initiate a more customer-driven approach in the organization. A broad panel also makes it easier for colleagues to participate and ask questions within their specific areas.
A niche panel is perfect when you're developing something new or want to explore specific behavior or test ideas against a selected group of users. If you're unsure about what's best for you, you can always contact the coaches, and we'll help you.
How many responses can we expect?
Over time, you'll typically get responses from about a third of the panelists. Remember, it's more about getting qualitative insights that will advance your work than getting as many responses as possible.
Do panel participants expect any rewards?
We don't recommend offering discounts or products to get people to join a panel, as panelists tend to perform better when they join a panel because they want to contribute rather than for incentives. Show that you're listening and taking in the thoughts and ideas of the panelists and theyβll feel that their contribution is valuable.
How often do panelists expect to receive questions?
Be based on your needs and roadmap. The most common practice is to ask a question to the panel every four weeks. Some ask more frequently, for example, during a project period. We recommend managing expectations by informing panelists if you're going to ask questions frequently, such as once a week. The easiest way to do this is through the video format.
